Salgado and Machado win J.G. Boswell Scholarships

Angelica has worked to maintain a 4.1014 grade point average during her four years at CHS, putting her at number three overall in her class of approximately 160 students. She earned a 1240 cumulative score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), a college entrance exam.
The daughter of Janice and Tom Salgado, she has been active in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club on campus, serving as secretary, vice president and president. Angelica is also active in the associated student body and has served as class president and class vice president, as well as ASB vice president.
A member of the California Scholastic Federation (CSF) for four years, she also competed with the academic decathlon team this year. She has been a member of Talent Search all four years in high school.
Along with those activities, she was named Corcoran’s youth citizen of the year earlier this year. She attended the Hugh O’Brien Youth leadership camp and Rotary’s Camp Royal, another leadership camp. She has been a lector at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, an altar server at the same church and a volunteer in the church religious education office.
Angelica competed in cross country three years, attending the state meet two years in a row and earning scholar athlete status this year. She is a four-year member of the track and field team.
She has been accepted at Fresno State, CSU Bakersfield, CSU Long Beach, UC Irvine, Sacramento State, Cal Poly Pomona, UC Riverside, Cal Lutheran and Vanguard in Costa Mesa. When she decides which school to attend, she plans to major in electrical engineering.
The scholarship has definitely made the choice easier.
“”It makes a huge financial difference for my parents and for me. Now, I can focus more on my education,” she noted.
Marvin has excelled academically, maintaining a 4.22 grade point average and earning a 1270 on the SAT. He plans to major in mechanical engineering while in college.
He has filled his time with both extra-curricular activities and sports. Marvin is a four-year member of FFA, earning his green hand degree, chapter degree and state degree. He also earned a chapter scholarship award, a job proficiency award and a chapter leadership award.
He is a member and volunteer at Our Lady of Lourdes and has been a PBIS student of the month. Marvin has been named class athlete of the year two years in a row and has also earned the class scholar athlete of the year title both his sophomore and junior years.
He is a four-year member of the CHS football team, earning all-league status as an offensive lineman and lineback both his sophomore and senior years. He was a member of the league champ and valley championship teams as a sophomore and won the Golden Panther award as a senior. He was also the team’s scholar athlete three years.
As a four-year medalist for the basketball team, Marcin earned scholar athlete awards three years in a row and was team captain this season. He also competed in track and field three years, earning most improved and Golden Panther awards.
He has been accepted at UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego and San Diego State, Fresno State and UC Merced. He looks forward to making his choice.
“This scholarship give me the ability to go to a school that I choose and not that I have to settle for,” he noted. “It opens up the choices.”
