Church to celebrate anniversary

Monday, 16 October 2017 22:04 Written by

When at the traffic light at the corner of Whitley and Letts Avenues, near Rite Aid and Corcoran High School, people may wonder about the large church on the corner. It is the home of the Corcoran First United Methodist Church, which was organized in 1907. The present building was constructed in 1950 and is now nearing 70 years old. The building was constructed with generous donations from the congregation and the community. Memorials include family names such as Allen, Blackmon, Chappell, Domer, Doris, Gilkey, Harvey, Highstone, Johnson, Loyd, Maroot, McFarland, Mitchell, Nicholes, Nickerson, Nikkel, Rideman, Riddle, Riley, Rosprim, Runkle, Salyer, Sarenius, Sawtelle, Schwenk, Stiles, Tahajian, Vernon and Walters as well as Corcoran Mercantile employees and Business Men of Corcoran. Some of the history of Corcoran is written with these names on the church walls. Like any 70-year old building, the current one needs maintenance. As current members make choices, they pause to honor the people who gave so generously to construct it. The community, and especially the family members of those who gave are invited to a special service Sunday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. Thanks will be given for each memorial window and gift, and any family members of those who gave will be recognized. Also, anyone who has attended a wedding, party or memorial service in the building are invited to attend. There will be a hymn sing, followed by refreshments at 3:30 p.m. that same day. The entire community is invited to attend.  The church also hosts a food bank every fourth Tuesday each month. Overcomers Outreach meets four times a week, including at 10 a.m. on Sundays. The facility is available for rent for alcohol free weddings, parties, meetings and memorial services. Worship is every Sunday at 11 a.m. You can also visit the church’s Facebook page-Corcoran First United Methodist Church.
